For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the Forte Belvedere area is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment in one of the most beautiful areas of Florence.
The Forte di Belvedere, whose real name is Fortezza di Santa Maria in San Giorgio del Belvedere, is one of the two fortresses of Florence, built at the end of the sixteenth century by the architect Bernardo Buontalenti per request of the Granduca Ferdinando I de' Medici. Located in the highest point of the Boboli hill, it can be accessed from the Costa San Giorgio, the via Belvedere or the via San Leonardo. The fortress had multiple purposes: protect the headquarters of the leaders, Palazzo Pitti, protect the area south of the city and more generally the whole of the Oltrarno; prove by its majesty the power of the Medicea and garantee a refuge to the Granduca too, in case of possible revolts: the fortress was in fact the last leg of Corridoio Vasariano that linked the Palazzo Vecchio to the Palazzo Pitti with a suspended path amidst an impressive amount of passages, apartments, corridors, bridges and gardens. The fortress was also probably planned to be a hiding place for the Medici family’s treasure, as recent discoveries show that a cavern was dug at the bottom of it, into a hill, directly from the central Palazzina. The only details of the fortification are in the inner villa, the elegant and white Palazzetto del Belvedere, that dominates the entire construction and served as residency to the Grand Duke. The fortress has never undergone a siege: the cannon shots that sounded from the fortress announced only that it was noon, and since then, the inhabitants of Florence have given it a friendly name and called it "il cannone delle pastasciutte" (the Pasta canon). Kept closed for a long time in the last century, it was reopened in 1951 and housed some temporary exhibitions at the time, such as the one dedicated to Henry Moore in the 70’s, and the one dedicated to the Ferrari motor vehicles (the first in the world, in 1990), or the one dedicated to Fernando Botero’s sculptures (in 1991). Today, the Forte Belvedere is an area where finds one of the most beautiful views of the city, to which it owes its name. During the summer, it is open to the public until late at night, with a bar-restaurant and a nightclub. In 2006 Alberto della Ragione exposed his collection and set up a giant couch of a dozen meters in one of the strategic points of the ramparts. Well served by numerous means of public transport, one can find a number of bus stops in this area, that lead to almost every area in the city.
