Apartments Florence Fortezza da Basso

For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the area around Fortezza da Basso is the ideal area for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment just outside the historical centre of the city.
La Fortezza da Basso, whose real name is Fortezza di San Giovanni Battista, is the largest works of modern fortification on fourteenth century walls in Florence. It was built by Pier Francesco da Viterbo and Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane
between 1534 and 1537 per request of Alessandro de' Medici. The gigantic fortress, and its characteristic star shape, was started immediately after the city was re-conquered by the Medici family after the siege of Florence. Its purpose was to provide a safe haven to the leaders in the event of a revolt, but also, and mainly, to impress and intimidate the Florentine and its opponents. La Fortezza, like most other buildings of the same nature, wasn’t used much, and remained in the hands of the Governments military until recent years, when it was picked out to be the headquarters of the exhibition pole of Florence after a long restoration and adaptation period not yet finished. Thanks to these works, it is now possible to see the 14th century Porta a Faenza and to follow the ancient course of the Mugnone, torrent that ran into a ditch in the city, as well as visit the Mastio and other structures of interest, like the Polveriera for example. To accommodate the events in Florence Exhibition hall, two new exhibition halls were built, the Padiglione Spadolini and the Padiglione Cavaniglia. The Palazzo dei Congressi of Florence was built in the gardens overlooking the Villa Contini Bonaccossi. All around the congress Palace are the Giardino della Fortezza (gardens of strength) and the University of Florence is also nearby. Well served by numerous means of public transport, one can find a number of bus stops in the area, that allow easy access to practically every area of the city.
