For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the area near the Piazza della Signoria is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment in the heart of Florence.
Piazza della Signoria is the central square of Florence, the authorities headquarters with the Palazzo Vecchio and the heart of the social life of the city. In an L shape is the medieval Florence, south of the Duomo and only a couple of steps away from the Ponte Vecchio and the Arno. The Piazza started to take its actual form in 1268, when the Ghibellini’s house was demolished during the Benevento battle by the Guelfi. The Palazzo della Signoria was then built, making it the centre of the city’s political life in contrast with the religious centre of the Piazza del Duomo and the commercial area of Mercato Vecchio, where the Piazza della Repubblica stands today. The Loggia della Signoria was also built in the fourteenth century, in order to host public ceremonies, and so was the Tribunale della Mercanzia, institute capable of settling disputes of civil and commercial matters. Centre of civil power, the square was also the site of public executions, of which the most famous is the one that happened on the 23rd of may 1498, when Girolamo Savonarola was hung and burnt for heresy (a plaque has been placed on the square, in front of the Fountain of Nettuno, in remembrance of this event). It is also here that he had, with his disciples, operated the “Rogo delle Vanità”, (literally translated by “woodpile of Vanity”), setting fire to many books, poems, gaming tables and clothes etc. The interventions in the next century mainly involve sculptured furniture and end in the Grand Duke period with the transformation of the Loggia della Signoria, making it a kind of open-air museum. The construction of the Uffizi in the mid sixteenth century also created a new perspective towards the river. The Piazza also undergoes nineteenth century “rehabilitation” like the historical centre, with neo-renaissance interventions happening in the area such as the Palazzo delle Assicurazioni in front of the Palazzo Vecchio. Well served by numerous means of public transport, one can find a number of bus stops in this area that allow access to almost every area in the city .
