For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the area around the Piazza Libertà is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment on the outskirts of the city centre.
Piazza della Libertà marks the point further north of the historical centre. It was built in the 1800’s in the course of intense activities around the creation of the ring road, although around Porta San Gallo an open space already existed, called Piazza di Porta San Gallo where the Arc of Triumph was erected in 1738 following the end of the Medici dynasty to celebrate the arrival of the Lorena. It is characterized by classical style arcades and a square with an antique doorway and the Arco di Trionfo in the middle, separated from a pond with a fountain. The story around the Parterre is more complex, it is found to the north of the square. As its name suggests, this was a garden “alla francese” (the French way), where, in 1922, the architect Enrico Fantappié erected the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. It was the main exhibition centre until the opening of the Padiglione Spadolini in the Fortezza da Basso. Only a part of this structure remains today, because of the big underground parking that was built here for the FIFA World Cup Italy 1990 as well as the multi-cultural centre that was built to host concerts, film screenings and book presentations. The square is located between the beautiful garden of Gherardesca and the garden of Fortezza, and is also located close to the University of Florence. Well served by numerous means of public transports, one can find a number of bus stops here that enable easy access to almost every area of the city.
