For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the area of Sant’Ambrogio is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment in the heart of the city.
In the small piazza Sant’Ambrogio, to the east of the historical centre and north of Santa Croce, one can find the homonymous church, whose facade is rather anonymous and unadorned, and inside of which an aisle lacks the style of many of the works that succeeded over the centuries, but although its most precious decorations are now at the Uffizi, it remains one of the richest churches in the history and atmosphere of the city. Since 1401 all those who visit the church on december 7th, Sant’Ambrogio’s day, are granted special indulgence. Moreover, celebrations were held for the Santo Miracolo (Holy Miracle) 700° (1930) and 750° (1980) anniversaries. The tabernacle with Sant’Ambrogio’s blessing in terracotta invetriata, located at the corner of the via de’Macci, on the opposite corner of the church, was built by Giovanni della Robbia per request of the Potenza della Città Rossa (power of the red city), one of the most important of the ancient celebrated lay brigades, association dating back to 1343. These groups, which could be defined as “goliardici”, had the task of organizing festivities and events in the city and every neighborhood had its brigade, which elected a representative and always gave him a high-fly name such as Grand Monarch, Emporer, Lord, etc. In Sant'Ambrogio was present one of the most ancient and vital of these popular institutions, the Signoria del Gran Monarca della Città Rossa (the Lordship of the Monarch of the Red City), so called because it symbolized the whole area known as the Mattonaia, brick area. The emblem, a red fortress, appears on the drop of the tabernacle, as well as on the corner wall of the church, where two stone plates are dated 1577 and bear its name in writing. Well served by numerous means of public transport, one can find a number of bus stops in this area that enable access to roughly every area of the city.
