For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the San Frediano area is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment in one of the most well known areas of the city.
Borgo San Frediano is a street situated Diladdarno, as they say in Florence, in a district where one can still find shops belonging to the artisans of the Oltrarno. In this street and in Piazza del Carmine are the church and convent dedicated to San Frediano, built before the tenth century. According to the legend,it is in this area that the original saint of Lucca miraculously furrowed water from the Arno and deviated it to avoid a flood. In 1783, the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo suppressed the church and the convent and joined both of them to the church of San Frediano in Cestello, whose dome dominates the homonymous area. Between the Arno and the village of San Frediano, the convent, church and gardens of the Monache dell’Arcangelo Raffaello, or Romite di Ponte, who lived in the convent from 1534 to 1749. The church of Romite di Ponte in Borgo San Frediano became a sculpture studio, where the sculptor Pasquale Romanelli worked from 1851 to 1887. Today, a plaque with a medallion is to be found here, in remembrance of him. On the architrave of the door, remains a marble low relief sculpted by Cennini, representing the Archangel Raffaello and Tobiolo. Vasco Pratolini has also devoted a book called “Le ragazze di San Frediano” (girls of San Frediano) to this village, that has made San Frediano one of the most popular areas of Florence. Well served by numerous means of public transport, one can find a number of bus stops here that allow access to almost every area of the city.
