For those seeking an accommodation in Florence, the area near the Teatro Comunale is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment close to the centre of the city.
The Teatro Comunale di Firenze is found in the Corso Italia, near the Fortezza da Basso, and is the largest theatre in the city. It was founded in 1862 as an outdoor arena (Arena Fiorentina) in an area just outside of the ancient city walls. It was created by Telemaco Bonaiuti at a crucial time for Florence, between 1865 and 1871 and at that time, bore the name of Politeama fiorentino. The theatre was destroyed by a fire, then hit by bombings in 1944 and also heavily damaged by a flood (the Alluvione di Firenze), before being reconstructed in its actual form in 1966: a large audience and two large semicircular Palchetti galeries allowing a total of 2003 seats. Also part of the complex is a smaller theatre called the Piccolo Teatro that can seat up to 600 people. The name “Comunale” dates back to 1933. Its heart hosts the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, that has performed a great number of classical music, operas and international ballets: Vittorio Gui, Bruno Walter, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Zubin Mehta, von Karajan, Riccardo Muti, Maria Callas, Pietro Mascagni, Richard Strauss, Paul Hindemith, Bela Bartòk, Igor Stravinskij, Luigi Dallapiccola, Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, etc. Among the directors one remembers Max Reinhardt, Gustav Gründgens, Luchino Visconti, Franco Zeffirelli, Luca Ronconi, Bob Wilson, Giorgio De Chirico and Oskar Kokoschka. Well served by a number of means of public transport, one can find numerous bus stops in the area of the Teatro Comunale, that lead to almost every area in the city, as well as the neighboring train station.
