For those seeking apartments in Milan, the Isola area is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay just a couple of steps away from the heart of the city.
The Isola di Milano area is found near the Porta Garibaldi station and was developed between the end of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth. Its name (also called “Isole” - islands) comes from a nearby farm, the Isola Garibaldi, but can also refer to a specific condition when the area was isolated from the surroundings after the construction of the railway and the interruption of the route between Porta Garibaldi and Dergano and Como. This isolation and the presence of nearby goods, as well as historical industries such as l’Elvetica nearly immediately turned the area into workers quarters, as evidenced by the presence today of a number of associations and workers’ unions. The area presents a number of typical houses from the Milan rationalism, like the Casa Ghiringhelli of 1933, the Casa Comolli-Rustici of 1935 and the Casa di via Perasto of 1934, all by Terragni and Lingeri. By 2010 in the area, one will be able to see the “Bonsai del Central Park” in a yet to see the day garden, planned by Andreas Kipar, the landscape architect. Well served by all means of transport, there are a number of tram, bus and metro stops (green line Garibaldi), to be found here, that will take you to almost any part of the city, as well as the nearby Garibaldi F.N. train station.
