La Défense is an area made of skyscrapers and offices, condominiums and shopping malls, that is located between the districts of Nanterre, Courbevoie and Puteaux (all in the department of the Hauts-de-Seine), west of Paris. La Défense takes its name from the statue of "La Défense de Paris" ("The defence of Paris"), built in 1883 to commemorate the soldiers that had defended Paris during the Franco-Prussian war. The areas name sometimes causes confusion among foreigners who assume it has something to do with the army. In september 1958, l'Établissement public pour l'aménagement de La Défense (EPAD, translated by Public Institute for the defence management”) was created by the state to manage and create the area. La Défense started to take shape: the first buildings (of which the first was an ESSO building) were constructed and began to replace factories, barracks and various farms. These “first generation” skyscrapers were all identical and restricted to a height of 100 metres. In 1966 “la Tour Nobel” was the first office building constructed in the area. Today, La Défense, delimitated by the Arc de la Défense located west of it, is the largest directional centre in all Europe. Also to the west, a major public transport interchange is to be found, built around and above the train station that existed before the modern development of the area. This includes a bus station, the end of the tram line T2, an RER A station and the end of the Parisian metro line 1 "La Défense (Grande Arche)". Line 1 also has a station on the eastern side of La Défense, closer to Paris, named "Esplanade de La Défense".
