Place Vendôme, in the 1st arrondissement, is one of the famous squares in Paris, that was built by Louis XIV in 1686 to accommodate the Royal Library, the academies and a statue of him on horseback, similar to what was done by Henry IV in the Place des Vosges. The project, with its typical octagonal form is one of Jules Hardouin-Mansart’s works. Louis XIV’s horseback statue was destroyed during the French Revolution (only one foot was preserved and can be found today at the Carnevalet Museum) while the square was renamed Place des Piques (Pike Square). As from the second empire, the square became an area home to the most prestigious Parisian jewellers, who still have their showcases here today. The Austerlitz Column is found in the centre of the square, and was built for Napoleon after the victory that occurred there. The French Ministry of Justice is also found there, at number 13: on its facade, a curious carved meter became the national unit of measure during the revolution period. The hotel Ritz is at number 15, opened in 1898, it is a place where a number of personalities are accommodated when they visit Paris: Marcel Proust had organized a grand dinner here on July 1st 1907, and Princess Diana spent her final hours of life here before the terrible accident in the Alma tunnel. Well served by all means of public transport, one can find a number of bus and metro stops (Tuileries, Pyramides, Concorde and Madeleine) here, that enable easy access to most areas of the city.
