For those seeking an accommodation in Rome, the Prati area is ideal for businessmen or tourists wishing to stay in their own apartment in one of the most characteristic areas of the city.
Prati is the XXII district of Rome. Until 1870 it was a vast territory of natural (“prati”) meadows, fields and swamps punctuated above all in the sloped area of Monte Mario, by some rural houses. The rest is completely desert, known as “Pianella di Prati“, “Pianella d’Oltretevere“ or "Prati di Castello" (referring to Castel Sant’Angelo). After 1870 came the initial housing and urbanization operations, already partly imagined under the Papal government. Initially the area was used for military exercises and an area was named Piazza d’Armi (Arm/Weapon square). In the beginning of the ‘900s came the administrative and urbanization planning to face the problems that arised from development of Rome: On the 20th of august 1921 the Prati district was constituted, the last district of Rome. The main roads of the district are via Cola di Rienzo and the rettifilo that connects the piazza Cavour to the Piazza Mazzini. The first part leads from the piazza Risorgimento and arrives at the Tiber, its continuation leads to the Piazza del Popolo. It focuses on the commercial part of the district, together with the Via Ottaviano leaving aside the Via Pompeo Magno and viale Giulio Cesare. Between the latter and the viale delle Milizie, one finds the barracks belonging to the army and military police as well as the civil court of Rome, while the Court of justice is found in Piazza Cavour, home to the court of cassation known to the Romans as “Palazzaccio”. Along the Tiber, one finds the lungoteveri Michelangelo and dei Mellini (riverbanks) as well as the bridges Pietro Nenni, Margherita, Cavour and Umberto I that connect to the right bank. Well served by all means of public transport, one can find numerous trams, buses and metro line A (Lepanto and Ottaviano-San Pietro stops) here, that lead to roughly all parts of the city.
