The origin of its name isn’t certain yet, although it is most likely that it comes from the Latin Trivium that suggests the confluence of three roads in the Piazzetta dei Crociferi, located next to the modern Trevi square. The most famous monument in the area is the Trevi fountain, by Nicolò Salvi, who wished to narrate, through architecture and sculptures, the story of the Aqua Virgo. The scenery is dominated by a carriage in the form of a shell on which stands the great statue of Oceano by Pietro Bracci, next to the statues of Salubrità and Abbondanza, by Filippo Della Valle; the carriage is pulled by seahorses, preceded by tritons. A famous tradition that brings luck has it that anyone who tosses a coin over his shoulder and into the fountain will certainly be back in the city. Another fountain in the neighborhood is the Triton fountain in Piazza Barberini, as well as the Quattro fountain, that represents the Arno, the Tiber, the Diana and the Giunone. In the neighborhood, one also finds the Quirinale Palace that rises from the homonymous hill and is the President of the Italian Republic’s official residency as well as one of the symbols of the Italian State.
